J Humphries, Associate AIA
Mississippi State University / Bachelor of Architecture
J is interested in contextual design that engages a site’s history and encourages sustainable future narratives and trajectories. He draws upon hand sketching in his process to solve problems at every scale. J brings a diverse set of background influences to archimania. Outside of his previous architectural experience in Louisiana and Mississippi, J has worked in areas such as product design and film production. He has contributed to the non-profit realm while working at the Jackson, MS Community Design Center and for Ko’ox Boon, headquartered in Mexico. He has even moonlighted at a speakeasy. J was also former communications committee member of AIA Mississippi.
J also spends time sketching outside of work as a form of visual thought and investigation. Within this fluid medium, he plays with lines, exploring the possibility of a more flexible, resilient built environment. His artwork has been recognized by AIA Mississippi, and shown in: Priced to Move, 2014 & 2015, Ko'ox Boon Art Auction, 2014 & 2015 and Works in Retrograde, 2014.
While in school, J won the TrimJoist Competition, which funded his studies of contemporary architecture and design in the Netherlands. He was a member of the Embark, New Memphis Leadership Program in 2016. He is an associate member of the AIA and is currently pursuing licensure. J is a big fan of couches—places to lounge and is an Eagle Scout.
