Memphis, Tennessee
Designed with a neighborhood in mind, indoor and outdoor spaces integrate with nature and create places for connectivity and solitude while offering opportunities for a variety of activities.
The project is rooted in three key principals: that it be barrier-free, human-centric and trauma-informed. The Studio Village is a unique housing community created to address the needs of the unsheltered population in Memphis and help them reenter permanent housing and the permanent workforce.

The campus is comprised of a community center along with a mix of studios and cottages scattered within the site. The community center is a building component full of services, offering needed support. The center, also dubbed as “the town center” is designed as a core element in the community. It has an entry lobby, physical and occupational therapy rooms, a “living room” that doubles as a flexible space for other activities, a kitchen/learning kitchen for group cooking, offices for staff, a shower area, and a laundry. The building also offers courtyard spaces for relaxation, activities, an outdoor fireplace, and a contemplation space. A boardwalk encompasses “the town center” offering access to all studios and cottages. In addition, there’s a walking path that has outlets for physical exercise, reading, and a hammock area for socialization. The planning is strategic and efficient, using warm materials such metal and cedar siding creating a familiar, but modern environment, contrasting a more institutional feeling for traditional solutions.
