The renovation of an unused hospital courtyard between two adjoining towers offers a more welcoming and humane place for respite. Pavers, installed in an organic form, contrast surrounding hospital towers that enclose the space. Bamboo was introduced as the main landscape material offering a new vertical scale and providing a soft veil to mask the building. The entry and windows are delineated by Cor-ten steel thresholds on the floor plane to provide openings through the bamboo veil. Massive wood seating elements act as a functional device and sculptural element. The courtyard is designed around a permanent storm grate to later be concealed by sculpture that will act as the focal point of the space.

The courtyard became the catalyst for the inception of the outpatient lobby. Oak benches in both the outpatient lobby and the adjacent existing courtyard create a dialogue between the two nodes of rest and reflection.

The outpatient lobby and cafe design was liberated from the standard applications of hospital finishes and given the opportunity to reinforce the rebranding of the facility. A wood ceiling greets visitors upon entry and defines a significant intersection for both visitors and staff. The guest services desk is located at a pivotal juncture to enhance wayfinding and facilitate a controlled access point. The east facing glass wall allows earlier morning light to reach deep into the space. Informal resting areas are defined by inlaid carpet, while the more natural and organic seating elements slide in and out of these prescribed zones.

The new entry sequence transforms the outdated interior environment of the outpatient facility into a vibrant space pierced by daylight and views to the exterior.
